SISSCO’s design, fabrication, testing and installation of 6 Bridge Maintenance Travelers for the Goethals Bridge, connecting commuters from New Jersey to New York City, allows access to the underside of the bridge for ongoing maintenance and inspections.
As this was a design build contract, SISSCO’s engineering team was tasked to design all aspects of the bridge maintenance traveler.
For the electrical controls, SISSCO designed a custom PLC-controlled anti-skew detection and correction system that allows the traveler to self-correct as it travels down the runway system.
Features of this controls system included a large HMI display with continuous feedback for skew as well as all other possible faults or limits. All controls components were designed for saltwater outdoor use as well as having vandal protection.
The structural & mechanical design was 3D modeled using various software platforms along with a full finite element analysis of all componentry.
Fabrication and assembly of the traveler was completed by SISSCO’s production and welding team. Each traveler was hung on a test runway system set up in SISSCO’s facility and was ran through a rigorous testing procedure for the owner’s approval.
SISSCO also performed a turnkey Union installation of the travelers onto the Goethals Bridge. After installation, a full commissioning and testing procedure was completed for the final turnover of the bridge maintenance travelers.
