Important Overhead Crane Terminology

All specialized industries are going to have words, terms, and phrases that are specific to that sector. An outsider may not even understand what other people are talking about because of the technical language. Certain words and terms are frequently used by the overhead crane and hoist industry. Knowing some of the most critical communication associated with the material handling industry can improve productivity. Below, we will highlight a small list of the most commonly used words and terms.

We are proud members of the CMAA community, which stands for Crane Manufacturers Association of America (formerly known as the Electric Overhead Crane Institute). CMAA certified means that cranes and components are built to specific safety standards.

The critical load is a safety component that protects the entire system when an amount is moved without proper control. Any failures remain isolated without halting the rest of the load.
Explosion proof cranes are designed to localize bursts within components of the crane, which prevents any potential accidents caused by the ignition of a hazardous material.
Lift is the highest point at which a crane’s hook can be safely placed.
A top running crane is a favorite type of overhead crane that operates on a fixed runway. They are built with movable bridges so that the device can be portable or stationary.Single failure proof helps to localize failures to a separate component and not the whole crane system. Under these conditions, a crane will stay in control of a critical load even if a part fails.
